Culinary delights for you at the Italian market in Ljubljana from June 16 to 19
Idea Italia, the Italian food market with delicacies from our western neighbours, will be in Ljubljana for the fourth time around from June 16 to 19, welcoming visitors from 8 am to 8 pm in Pogačarjev trg, next to Ljubljana central market. Fresh products from Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany, Umbria and Emilia Romagna will be on display. During the weekend the market will feature cooks from Lombardy who will prepare a traditional rice with pork meat, called riso alla pilota. Those who like to look around can test for free their skills at foosball, while the youngest will enjoy an educational game that will make them discover Italian towns.
Italy is the largest rice producer in Europe. The Piedmont and Lombardy regions are Italy’s rice bowl, which is why this time around our street kitchen will feature cooks from Lombardy to make for happy tummies. You will have the opportunity to taste riso alla pilota, a traditional recipe from Mantova that takes its name from labourers who used to husk rice, called piloti. Vialone Nano, an excellent rice variety for risotto, will be for sale, too. The many stalls will also offer snacks and light bites, like porchetta (deboned and stuffed suckling pig), olive ascolane (meat-stuffed, breaded and fried olives), bruschette, arancini (fried rice balls stuffed with meat, cheese, peas and tomato sauce) and, last but not least, mozzarella.
Sellers from Sicily, the most southern region in Italy, will cheer up visitors with a sweet tooth with granita, a refreshing frozen treat, cannoli and other typical desserts and sweets, while their neighbours from Sardinia will bring a traditional long-lasting flatbread known as pane carasau. Tuscany will present a wide range of cheese from goat, sheep and cow milk, accompanied by beer and wine, wild boar salami and olive oil. Emilia Romagna is well known for parmigiano and mortadella, Umbria for its dry-cured meats – especially prosciutto.
